Xander couldn’t believe his luck. He kept telling himself over and over again, Don’t mess this up.
Sammy was coming over.
Had he cleaned up? The maids had come yesterday. Surely he hadn’t done anything too disgusting since then. He laughed at himself.
“What? Are you laughing?” Sammy looked pleased at the thought.
“No, well, yes. I’m just hoping my house is clean.”
“I hope it’s a total mess.”
“Why?”
“Then I’ll feel more normal around you. I’m sure you live in a palace compared to my apartment. And if it’s a mess, I’ll know you’re for real.”
“I’m for real. Don’t worry about that.”
“After tonight, I’m not sure you are.” She opened her eyes fully and turned the full force of her gaze on him. “I should thank you. For all of it.”
“Hey, you’re welcome.”
“You don’t realize how much of an angel you are to me right now.” Her eyes turned misty, enough that he wanted to change the subject immediately. He didn’t think he could handle any more tears.
“I’m not an angel. Ask any of the guys. But you do things to me, and suddenly I want to be better.” If she only knew how he’d always lived his life, she’d probably not be too impressed.
“Nah, your heart’s in the right place. And I’m sure it always has been. You can’t make this up or create it in a day.”
“What?”
“Your whole knight-in-shining-armor bit.”
He shook his head. “I don’t see myself that way.”
“And that’s part of your charm.”
So, he had charm. He sat back against the seat and crossed his arms. They drove in silence for a while, long enough that Xander wondered if she’d fallen asleep, and then she said again, “Thank you, Xander.”
“You’re welcome.”
They arrived at his apartment building, and the driver drove them down into the garage and parked in front of the automatic glass doors that led to the lobby. He and Sammy entered the elevator and rode up to the top floor.
“You’re in the penthouse? Man, I really hope the place is a mess.”
He shook his head. “You’re something, Sammy. Just enjoy it. I do.”
The elevator doors opened up onto a large room. He tried to see it through her eyes. He was very proud of his view, the floor-to-ceiling windows that lined the opposite wall. His shoes and socks sat beside the couch and a couple dishes rested on the coffee table. Maybe that would be enough to put her at ease. He’d never had a woman want it to be messy before.
“It’s beautiful.” Sammy made her way into the room, ran her fingers along the back of his couch, and immediately went to stand at the window. The LA skyline spread out in front of them. The lights on the buildings seemed even more magical with Sammy looking at them. The Christmas tree that kept building and then disappearing on the face of a skyscraper made him smile.
“You don’t have a tree?”
He shook his head. “I hadn’t even thought about getting one until now.”
She nodded. “I don’t have one either.”
But he knew her reasons for not having one were probably different from his.
